How Do I Know If My Double-Glazing Needs Replacing?

Posted on February 27, 2024 by BarbaraJDostal

We are ISO9001 quality management accredited ensuring you receive the best quality in both service and products. In recent years technology for manufacturing has advanced significantly, meaning that updated and longer lasting products are being developed all the time. Homes that are constructed today are far superior to those that were built post-war. Double glazing windows today have hugely improved thermal performance and longevity. Although you could simply replace the weather seal, it may be more cost-effective in the long run to replace your windows completely.

The next step is to clean the glass, which you can do with warm soapy water or a window cleaning product. Adding a cup of white vinegar to your soapy water can help to prevent streaks on your windows. Once you have cleaned the inside of the frame, the next step is to clean the frame using a sponge and warm soapy water. Do not use a sponge upvc double glazed windows that has a scouring side as this can scratch your frame and the glass. Once all sides of the frame have been wiped clean, you should use a soft cloth to dry the frame. Soapy water should be strong enough to get white UPVC to return to the usual brightness but if not, there are specific products you can buy to get them whiter.

Old aluminium spacer bars are conductors of temperature and act as thermal bridges transferring the cold from the outside pane to the inside. This is why the edge of the glazed unit has always been the weak spot where it’s the coldest. Warm edge spacer bars are blended from stainless steel and polypropylene which has a low thermal conduction rate and this reduces heat loss at the edge of the sealed unit. The main component of the window is the double glazed sealed unit, also known as an insulated glass unit (IGU) which sits in a frame of uPVC, aluminium or timber. Over time double glazed windows may suffer some wear and tear as well as various kinds of minor damages like the insulated glazing unit starting to leak gradually. Studies from the Centre for Sustainable Energy show that when around 25% of all the gas has evaporated, the window’s thermal performance is reduced. It is at this point that it could be necessary to consider replacing the windows completely.

With double glazing windows, you can rest easy knowing they are much harder to break compared to windows with a single glass pane. The seal around double-glazed windows also makes them harder to break. Double glazing windows work by creating an insulating gas layer, typically of air, xenon, argon, or krypton, between two panes of glass.

New double glazed windows or retrofitting of existing single glazed windows?

When the window glazing putty is removed, prime any bare wood inside the window frame. A shellac-based primer such as Zinsser BIN is a good choice because it dries in minutes. We construct our units by a robot in an Argon filled chamber to ensure the only thing in our sealed unit is Argon. Other companies drill two holes into the frame and hand pump the Argon which can leave the unit filled with a mixture of air and Argon. By not drilling the frame we maintain the structural integrity and airtight seal of the frame. First, the two panes of glass are cut to size in accordance with the measurements provided by the customer and checked by our team.

We’ll also look at how double-glazed windows are made so that you can better understand their workings. The more you know about how double glazing works, the more empowered you are as a consumer to choose the best double-glazed windows for your home. Double-glazed windows and doors are most commonly priced by the square metre, so the more you need, the more costly it will be. According to ServiceSeeking.com.au, the average cost of newly-fitted double glazed windows is around $1,350 per square metre, based on quotes submitted to the site in 2018.

Read on to find out the science behind how double glazing and triple glazing work, the ins and outs of their energy ratings and how improving your windows will help you save money. If you’re looking for a way to improve the energy efficiency, reduce outside noise, make your home more secure or all of the above, then double or triple glazing are great options. According to figures published by The Energy Saving Trust as much as 20% of all heat loss in a home is through its windows and doors. Not only does this have a negative impact on a household’s carbon footprint it also increases its fuel bills. With energy prices forever on the rise, it makes complete financial sense to make build a house as thermally efficient as possible. The more significant the gap between the panes of glass, the greater the acoustic insulation benefits. This can be improved by making one pane of glass thicker than the other, for example, 6mm on one side and 4mm on the other.

In most double glazing units, the space is filled with air or flushed with dry nitrogen just prior to sealing. In a standard sealed glass insulating unit, air currents between the two panes of glazing carry heat to the top of the unit and settle into cold pools at the bottom. Each glass pane for a double-glazed window usually has a thickness of 4 mm to 6 mm with a gas layer in between measuring 6 mm to 20 mm in thickness. If your goal is to minimise heat loss and maximise noise reduction, we recommend using a thicker double-glazed or even triple-glazed unit. Double glazing has been an established trend with homeowners for some time now, but how do double glazing windows work? In this article, we dive into the world of double-glazed windows, exploring their benefits, how they keep our homes warmer and more energy efficient, and the different types available. We’ll also answer some of the most frequently asked questions about double glazing.

Condensation occurs when water molecules get closer together as they get colder, such as on the surface of a cold window pane. As the molecules get closer together, they form visible drops of water, which we see as condensation. Remember that oil-based putty remains soft for days, so be careful not to touch it after smoothing. You’ll have to wait several days before you can prime and paint oil-based putty; check the label. If you’re thinking of upgrading your windows, all our windows are bespoke made from a range of different glass products. Short waves can pass through glass but the long waves can’t, so the thermal energy of the infrared radiation becomes trapped bumping against the glass unable to pass through.

Misting happens when warm air comes into contact with colder surfaces (such as your double glazing) or the humidity is “too” high. If you want to know more about double glazing and windows get in touch with our friendly team – we manufacture our own products so can answer any of your glass related questions. Some people say that you should do some of the work yourself to save on adding double-glazed windows to the home. It’s often best to let us measure, order, and buy the materials directly. If you get the wrong measurements, you end up paying more in the long run. Chameleon has carried out an extensive range of sash window double glazing and full window frame refurbishment projects over our 14 years of operation.
